For companies that process large diameter round wood for mulch or biomass fuel production, Rotochopper introduces the LS-28 Log Splitter. Designed to maximize wood chipper or grinder efficiency, the LS-28 can be mounted on an excavator, skid steer, or other handling equipment with auxiliary hydraulics.
The LS-28 helps maximize the profitability of wood fiber commodities produced from logs by reducing wear part replacement costs (such as grinder teeth or chipper knives), fuel or electricity consumption, and other costs associated with chipping or grinding large diameter round wood.
Pre-splitting round wood before chipping or grinding promotes faster natural drying by exposing the inner fiber. For biomass fuel producers, natural air drying increases heat value, which lowers ash content because dry fiber burns hotter and more efficiently. Natural air drying can offer significant savings over mechanical drying systems for biomass fuels made from green wood, such as fuel pellets.
By pre-splitting wood, mulch and fuel producers can often utilize smaller, lower horsepower equipment to achieve desired production levels. “We added the LS-28 alongside our horizontal grinder lineup with the small to mid-sized mulch producers in mind—the kind of grinder owners that occasionally need to process over-sized logs and want to keep their operating costs low with a more compact grinder like the Rotochopper MP-2,” says Gib Harrington, Rotochopper VP of Product Development. “With the rise of fuel prices in the last few years, we’ve seen a sharp increase in companies looking to swap their 1,000 horsepower tub grinders and horizontal grinders for more fuel efficient solutions. The LS-28 Log Splitter is just one more tool we offer that lets mulch and fuel producers do more with less.”
Smaller pieces of wood grind or chip more efficiently, reducing fuel or electricity consumption and wear costs. Splitting wood prior to grinding or chipping also helps to break rocks and dirt free from bark, further lowering wear costs.
Unlike spiral cone log splitters, the LS-28 can split through any part of the log, not just the center. The LS-28 can therefore split even very wide logs by splitting through the outer grain, rather than through the denser heartwood. Splitting across the outer portions instead of the center produces pieces that grind or chip most efficiently.
In contrast to hydraulic ram wood splitters, the LS-28 is not limited by length, so logs do not need to be cut to length prior to splitting.
For many applications, the advantages of pre-splitting round wood with the LS-28 add up to a higher value end product at a lower cost. Although pre-splitting may add additional processing time and equipment, these costs are often quickly offset by lower grinder or chipper operating costs, lower drying costs, and other savings.
