End Product Challenges

State and provincial DOTs typically specify a maximum particle size of 1/2" (12 mm) or 3/8” (11 mm) minus for RAS used in public road surfaces. Fine grinding an abrasive feedstock can quickly CAUSE significant wear and downtime —unless you have the controlled wear and simplified maintenance of Rotochopper shingle grinders.

Particle Size and Binder Value

RAS requires a small particle size because the binding properties of asphalt cement are activated by heat within an asphalt plant. A small particle size allows the heat within an asphalt plant to effectively melt the asphalt cement in the RAS, thereby utilizing a higher percentage of the asphalt cement in the ground shingle material. Rotochopper grinding equipment maximizes the value of the asphalt cement by minimizing grinder operating and maintenance costs.
