The color and size of landscape mulch produced by Rotochopper equipment have met the approval of a famous customer—former World number 1 golfer Greg Norman.

Known as one of the greats of professional golf, the “Great White Shark” is also a leading golf course designer and one with very discerning tastes. Colored landscape mulch produced by a Rotochopper CP-118 located in Dubai Docks is providing the perfect colored back-drop to the world’s top golfers when they play the Greg Norman-designed “Fire” and “Earth” Courses at the Jumeriah Golf Estates in Dubai.

For the Fire and Earth courses—two of the four being built at the Jumeriah Golf Estates—Norman demanded a particular shade of brown mulch for various landscape features around both the course and clubhouse. The mulch needed to be organic, (to avoid risk of chemical leaching), fire retardant, and highly resistant to color fading, a quality achieved with a special UV-resistant finished applied during the grind-and-color process. The mulch also needed to meet very tight size specifications. For these reasons, the task for producing the mulch fell to a Rotochopper CP-118. The CP-118 is operating at Dubai Docks, grinding and coloring pre-ground pallet waste, wood chips, and waste teak from furniture manufacturing.

Desert Landscapes worked with Equipment Supply Services (ESS), Rotochopper’s regional representatives for the Middle East, to obtain the proper mulch equipment to satisfy their scrupulous clientele.

Sean Reilly, managing director of Equipment Supply Services, notes that Desert Landscapes was very selective in their choice of grinding and coloring equipment. “We have had to work very hard to secure this contract, but it is a fabulous advert for the quality and capabilities of the Rotochopper range.” Reilly states that, after reviewing several equipment makes and models, Desert Landscapes decided on the CP-118 because “we proved to them it could consistently make the size and color they needed to meet the tastes of Greg Norman and other demanding customers.”

Colored landscape mulch used on the "Fire" golf course. The CP-118 is scheduled to produce 87,500 cubic yards (80,000 cubic meters) of colored landscape mulch prior to the opening of the Fire golf course. Recognized as one of the premier golf complexes in the world, Jumeriah Golf Estates will host the Dubai World Championship—the climax of the European Tour—in November 2009. States Reilly, “This will be the world’s richest tournament with a $10 million prize fund and a $1.6 million first prize.

The tournament will be widely televised, so soon the world will be seeing the quality of this mulch!”
