Earth Resources is the largest landscaping company in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. They provide stone, gravel, sand and their most recent product, OBX Recycled Mulch. Tim Beacham, owner of Earth Resources, started this venture a couple years ago by taking in old trees, branches and debris from construction sites and grinding them for colored mulch. By branding the product as OBX Recycled Mulch, they are promoting a local product that also helps the environment.

We spoke with Tim to get his perspective on the growth of his company and how Rotochopper has played a part in their success.

Give a brief history of Earth Resources.

Earth Resources based in Kitty Hawk, NC has been providing the Outer Banks with landscaping including: crushed stone, river rock, decorative stones and colored mulch for over 25 years. We have the largest selection of mulch in the Outer Banks and are the only stone yard. We are a small business that loves getting to come to work everyday enjoying our scenic location on the Kitty Hawk Bay.

How long have you been a Rotochopper customer, and what machines do you own?

We have been a Rotochopper customer since March of 2017 when we made the decision to diversify our business by taking in green waste from locals and recycling the material into our OBX Recycled Mulch. We purchased a refurbished MC-266 with a colorizer. The business took off and has continued to double in growth each year, so we quickly realized we needed a bigger grinder to keep up with our demand. In August of 2018, we purchased a refurbished B-66 on tracks with the colorizer. The B-66T is much bigger and handles the larger material we bring in doubling our production.

What made you choose Rotochopper, and why do you continue to work with us?

When we decided to get into the mulch business, we reached out to other manufacturers and Rotochopper was honestly the only one to follow up with us. As it turns out, their patented grind and color system was exactly what we wanted and we have enjoyed working with them since.

What is your key to success that has brought growth to your business?

I think there are many things that have taken part in making us successful, but two that really stand out is marketing our product as recycled right here on the island. That is huge, because locals love products associated with OBX. Then, the quality of the products we produce keeps our customers coming back for more…
